IMS/VoLTE Signaling and Operations: RAN/UE Perspective *NEW*

Printer-friendly PDF version

The IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is the 3GPP network of choice for VoIP and advanced services and VoLTE (or Voice over LTE) is the initial service of the IMS architecture. IMS uses the existing LTE network as a transport network to support the delivery of VoLTE calls. This course uses a scenario- based approach to explore the IMS and the key services provided by IMS and the LTE networks. This course starts with a refresher of the VoLTE network architecture, followed by connectivity of the UE to VoLTE network components, highlighting an end-to-end signaling and traffic paths. Students then step through key scenarios such as VoLTE registration, VoLTE to VoLTE calls, and Interworking with the PSTN/3G.

Special Note: This course can be customized with VoLTE Signaling log walk-through, if provided by the customer.

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, the student will be able to:
• Sketch the VoLTE network architecture
• Walk through the following scenarios and identify the SIP messages and related parameters for:
- VoLTE registration
- VoLTE to VoLTE call setup and release
- VoLTE to PSTN interworking
- Voice Call Continuity
- Emergency Calls
• Step through the dedicated bearer setup during VoLTE call initiation
• Explain the QoS enhancements of the RAN to support VoLTE delay requirements including the key LTE features of TTI Bundling, Semi-Persistent Scheduling, and Robust Header Compression

Intended Audience

This course is designed for those involved in VoLTE deployment in LTE RAN and EPC networks.

Suggested Prerequisites

• Excellent understanding of LTE Air Interface Signaling
